Mhoba is an artisan rum brand from South Africa, founded in 2015 by Robert Greaves on his own sugar farm in the Mpumalanga region. He drew inspiration from Mauritius, where he first tasted rum made not from molasses but directly from fresh cane juice. The name Mhoba comes from the local Siswati language and refers specifically to sugar cane.
All Mhoba rums are created right at the brand's headquarters, from the hand harvesting of the cane to distillation in pot stills that Robert designed and built himself.
The production process is fully independent and exceptionally authentic. Fermentation is carried out using local and wild yeasts, with some rums fermenting for up to 21 days. The brand also uses innovative ageing techniques - for example, in glass jars with charred American oak planks or Cape Town wine barrels. This results in rums with intense character that combine vegetal and spicy notes with smoke, vanilla, tropical fruits or even hints of chocolate and tobacco.
The most famous products include the highly estery Pot Stilled High Ester, the fruity and complex Strand 101, the intense Bushfire with notes of African wood, as well as more subtle versions such as American Oak Aged or the fruity Franky's Pineapple. Mhoba will appeal to those looking for an honest and original rum with a unique South African terroir.
